JEE MainChemistryThermodynamicsMCQ+4 / −1
JEE Main 2025 (Online) 2nd April Morning Shift Chemistry - Thermodynamics Question 14 English Two vessels A and B are connected via stopcock. The vessel A is filled with a gas at a certain pressure. The entire assembly is immersed in water and is allowed to come to thermal equilibrium with water. After opening the stopcock the gas from vessel A expands into vessel B and no change in temperature is observed in the thermometer. Which of the following statement is true ?
  1. A
    dqeq0\mathrm{dq} eq 0dqeq0
  2. B
    The pressure in the vessel B before opening the stopcock is zero
  3. C
    dweq0\mathrm{dw} eq 0dweq0
  4. D
    dUeq0\mathrm{dU} eq 0dUeq0

Correct answer: B

  1. Identify the process

    Gas initially occupies vessel A. On opening the stopcock, it expands into vessel B.

    This is a free expansion (expansion into an evacuated space), provided vessel B was initially empty.

  2. Use the first law of thermodynamics

    dU=dq+dwdU = dq + dwdU=dq+dw

  3. Work done in free expansion

    In free expansion, the gas expands against zero external pressure.

    dw=−Pext dV=0dw = -P_{\text{ext}}\,dV = 0dw=−PextdV=0

    So, statement C is true.

  4. Temperature observation

    The thermometer shows no change in temperature. For an ideal gas, internal energy depends only on temperature, so

    ΔU=0\Delta U = 0ΔU=0

    Hence statement D is also true if the gas is ideal.

    Also from the first law,

    ΔU=q+w\Delta U = q + wΔU=q+w

    since w=0w=0w=0 and ΔU=0\Delta U=0ΔU=0, we get

    q=0q=0q=0

    Therefore statement A (which says dq≠0dq \ne 0dq=0) is false.

  5. About vessel B before opening the stopcock

    For free expansion to occur, vessel B must initially contain no gas, i.e. it must be vacuum.

    Therefore pressure in vessel B before opening the stopcock is

    PB=0P_B = 0PB=0

    So statement B is true.

  6. Choosing the correct option

    The physically essential condition for this process is that vessel B was initially evacuated, so the definitely correct statement is B.

    In standard single-correct MCQ format, this is the intended answer.

Final Answer

Option B is correct.
