JEE MainChemistrySome Basic Concepts of ChemistryMCQ+4 / −1
When a hydrocarbon A undergoes complete combustion it requires 11 equivalents of oxygen and produces 4 equivalents of water. What is the molecular formula of AAA ?
  1. A
    C9H8\mathrm{C}_{9} \mathrm{H}_{8}C9H8
  2. B
    C5H8\mathrm{C}_{5} \mathrm{H}_{8}C5H8
  3. C
    C11H4\mathrm{C}_{11} \mathrm{H}_{4}C11H4
  4. D
    C11H8\mathrm{C}_{11} \mathrm{H}_{8}C11H8

Correct answer: A

  1. Let the hydrocarbon be CxHy\mathrm{C}_x\mathrm{H}_yCxHy.

  2. For complete combustion:

CxHy+(x+y4)O2→xCO2+y2H2O\mathrm{C}_x\mathrm{H}_y + \left(x + \frac{y}{4}\right)\mathrm{O}_2 \rightarrow x\mathrm{CO}_2 + \frac{y}{2}\mathrm{H}_2\mathrm{O}CxHy+(x+4y)O2→xCO2+2yH2O
  1. Given:
  • Oxygen required =11= 11=11 equivalents
  • Water produced =4= 4=4 equivalents

For combustion of a hydrocarbon, the number of moles of water formed is:

y2=4\frac{y}{2} = 42y=4

So,

y=8y = 8y=8
  1. Oxygen required is:
x+y4=11x + \frac{y}{4} = 11x+4y=11

Substitute y=8y=8y=8:

x+84=11x + \frac{8}{4} = 11x+48=11 x+2=11x + 2 = 11x+2=11 x=9x = 9x=9
  1. Therefore, the molecular formula is:
C9H8\mathrm{C}_9\mathrm{H}_8C9H8
  1. Checking options:
  • A: C9H8\mathrm{C}_9\mathrm{H}_8C9H8 ✅
  • B: C5H8\mathrm{C}_5\mathrm{H}_8C5H8 gives oxygen needed =5+2=7= 5+2=7=5+2=7 ❌
  • C: C11H4\mathrm{C}_{11}\mathrm{H}_4C11H4 gives water =2=2=2 ❌
  • D: C11H8\mathrm{C}_{11}\mathrm{H}_8C11H8 gives oxygen needed =11+2=13=11+2=13=11+2=13 ❌

Hence, the correct answer is Option A.
