Correct answer: 6

  1. Use the reaction of alcohol with active metal

A polyhydric alcohol reacts with sodium as:

R(OH)n+n Na→R(ONa)n+n2 H2\mathrm{R(OH)}_n + n\,\mathrm{Na} \rightarrow \mathrm{R(ONa)}_n + \frac{n}{2}\,\mathrm{H_2}R(OH)n+nNa→R(ONa)n+2nH2

So, if a molecule has nnn alcoholic hydrogens, then 1 mole of the compound gives:

n2 mol of H2\frac{n}{2} \text{ mol of } \mathrm{H_2}2n mol of H2
  1. Calculate moles of compound XXX

Given mass of sample:

1.84 mg=1.84×10−3 g1.84\,\text{mg} = 1.84 \times 10^{-3}\,\text{g}1.84mg=1.84×10−3g

Molar mass of XXX:

92.0 g mol−192.0\,\text{g mol}^{-1}92.0g mol−1

Hence moles of XXX:

moles of X=1.84×10−392.0=2.0×10−5 mol\text{moles of } X = \frac{1.84 \times 10^{-3}}{92.0} = 2.0 \times 10^{-5}\,\text{mol}moles of X=92.01.84×10−3=2.0×10−5mol
  1. Calculate moles of hydrogen gas evolved

Volume of H2\mathrm{H_2}H2 at STP:

1.344 mL=1.344×10−3 L1.344\,\text{mL} = 1.344 \times 10^{-3}\,\text{L}1.344mL=1.344×10−3L

At STP, molar volume is:

22.4 L mol−122.4\,\text{L mol}^{-1}22.4L mol−1

So moles of H2\mathrm{H_2}H2 are:

moles of H2=1.344×10−322.4=6.0×10−5 mol\text{moles of } \mathrm{H_2} = \frac{1.344 \times 10^{-3}}{22.4} = 6.0 \times 10^{-5}\,\text{mol}moles of H2=22.41.344×10−3=6.0×10−5mol
  1. Relate moles of XXX and moles of H2\mathrm{H_2}H2

If each molecule has nnn alcoholic hydrogens, then:

2.0×10−5×n2=6.0×10−52.0 \times 10^{-5} \times \frac{n}{2} = 6.0 \times 10^{-5}2.0×10−5×2n=6.0×10−5

Simplifying:

1.0×10−5⋅n=6.0×10−51.0 \times 10^{-5} \cdot n = 6.0 \times 10^{-5}1.0×10−5⋅n=6.0×10−5 n=6n = 6n=6
  1. Final answer

The number of alcoholic hydrogens in compound XXX is:

6\boxed{6}6
  1. Comparison with stored answer

Stored correct answer = 666.

My derived answer also is 666, so they agree.
