Correct answer: A

  1. Henry’s law relation

    For a gas dissolved in water, p=KHxp = K_H xp=KHx where:

    • ppp = partial pressure of gas
    • xxx = mole fraction of gas in solution
    • KHK_HKH = Henry’s law constant

Thus, if we plot ppp vs xxx, the graph is a straight line through origin with slope equal to KHK_HKH.

  2. Given Henry’s law constants

    The gases have: KH(A)=30.40 kbarK_H(A)=30.40 \text{ kbar}KH(A)=30.40 kbar KH(B)=2.34 kbarK_H(B)=2.34 \text{ kbar}KH(B)=2.34 kbar KH(C)=1.56×10−5 kbarK_H(C)=1.56\times 10^{-5} \text{ kbar}KH(C)=1.56×10−5 kbar KH(D)=0.513 kbarK_H(D)=0.513 \text{ kbar}KH(D)=0.513 kbar

  3. Compare slopes

Since slope =KH= K_H=KH, larger KHK_HKH means steeper line.

    Ordering of KHK_HKH values: 30.40>2.34>0.513>1.56×10−530.40 > 2.34 > 0.513 > 1.56\times 10^{-5}30.40>2.34>0.513>1.56×10−5

    So slope order is: A>B>D>CA > B > D > CA>B>D>C

  4. Identify lines in the graph

In the usual ppp vs xxx graph:

    • the steepest line corresponds to the largest KHK_HKH oA o AoA
    • the least steep line corresponds to the smallest KHK_HKH oC o CoC

    Therefore, if line p is the steepest and line s is the flattest, then: p=A,s=Cp = A, \quad s = Cp=A,s=C

  5. Match with options

    This corresponds to Option A.
