Salt Analysis question

2023 · 11 Apr · Shift 1 · Q8

JEE MainChemistrySalt AnalysisMCQ+4 / −1
When a solution of mixture having two inorganic salts was treated with freshly prepared ferrous sulphate in acidic medium, a dark brown ring was formed whereas on treatment with neutral FeCl3\mathrm{FeCl}_{3}FeCl3, it gave deep red colour which disppeared on boiling and a brown red ppt was formed. The mixture contains :
  1. A
    SO 32−_3^{2-}32− & C 2_22 O 42−_4^{2-}42−
  2. B
    CH3COO−& NO3−\mathrm{CH}_{3} \mathrm{COO}^{-} \& ~\mathrm{NO}_{3}^{-}CH3COO−& NO3−
  3. C
    C2O42−& NO3−\mathrm{C}_{2} \mathrm{O}_{4}{ }^{2-} \& ~\mathrm{NO}_{3}^{-}C2O42−& NO3−
  4. D
    SO32−& CH3COO−\mathrm{SO}_{3}^{2-} \& ~\mathrm{CH}_{3} \mathrm{COO}^{-}SO32−& CH3COO−

Correct answer: B

  1. Test with freshly prepared ferrous sulphate in acidic medium

Formation of a dark brown ring is the classic brown ring test for the nitrate ion.

    NO3−→acidic mediumFeSO4brown ring complex\mathrm{NO_3^-} \xrightarrow[acidic\ medium]{FeSO_4} \text{brown ring complex}NO3−FeSO4acidic mediumbrown ring complex

So, one of the anions present must be:

    NO3−\boxed{\mathrm{NO_3^-}}NO3−

  2. Test with neutral FeCl3\mathrm{FeCl_3}FeCl3

A deep red colour that disappears on boiling with formation of a brown-red precipitate is characteristic of the acetate ion.

    • Acetate gives a deep red colour with neutral ferric chloride due to formation of ferric acetate.
    • On boiling, ferric acetate hydrolyses, so the red colour disappears and a basic ferric acetate / ferric hydroxide type brown-red precipitate forms.

    Thus, the second anion is:

    CH3COO−\boxed{\mathrm{CH_3COO^-}}CH3COO−

  3. Check the options

    • A: SO32−\mathrm{SO_3^{2-}}SO32− and C2O42−\mathrm{C_2O_4^{2-}}C2O42−
No nitrate present, so brown ring test cannot occur. ❌

    • B: CH3COO−\mathrm{CH_3COO^-}CH3COO− and NO3−\mathrm{NO_3^-}NO3−
Nitrate explains brown ring test; acetate explains ferric chloride red colour disappearing on boiling. ✅

    • C: C2O42−\mathrm{C_2O_4^{2-}}C2O42− and NO3−\mathrm{NO_3^-}NO3−
Nitrate fits first test, but oxalate does not give the characteristic deep red ferric chloride test described. ❌

    • D: SO32−\mathrm{SO_3^{2-}}SO32− and CH3COO−\mathrm{CH_3COO^-}CH3COO−
No nitrate, so brown ring test cannot occur. ❌

  4. Final answer

    The mixture contains:

    CH3COO− and NO3−\boxed{\mathrm{CH_3COO^-} \text{ and } \mathrm{NO_3^-}}CH3COO− and NO3−

    Hence, the correct option is:

    B\boxed{\text{B}}B
