The correct order of the atomic radii of C, Cs, Al, and S is :
  1. A
    S < C < Al < Cs
  2. B
    S < C < Cs < Al
  3. C

Correct answer: C

  1. Use periodic trends of atomic radius

    Atomic radius generally:

    • decreases across a period from left to right
    • increases down a group from top to bottom
  2. Locate the elements in the periodic table

    • C\mathrm{C}C : Period 2, Group 14
    • S\mathrm{S}S : Period 3, Group 16
    • Al\mathrm{Al}Al : Period 3, Group 13
    • Cs\mathrm{Cs}Cs : Period 6, Group 1
  3. Compare Al\mathrm{Al}Al and S\mathrm{S}S

Both are in Period 3. Across a period, radius decreases from left to right. Since Al\mathrm{Al}Al is to the left of S\mathrm{S}S, Al>S\mathrm{Al} > \mathrm{S}Al>S

  4. Compare Cs\mathrm{Cs}Cs with all others

    Cs\mathrm{Cs}Cs is in Period 6 and Group 1, so it has the largest atomic radius among the given elements. Cs>Al, S, C\mathrm{Cs} > \mathrm{Al},\ \mathrm{S},\ \mathrm{C}Cs>Al, S, C

  5. Compare C\mathrm{C}C and S\mathrm{S}S

Although radius decreases across a period, moving down one period increases size significantly. Typical atomic radii show sulfur is slightly larger than carbon. Hence, C<S\mathrm{C} < \mathrm{S}C<S

  6. Combine all comparisons

    Therefore, the increasing order of atomic radii is C<S<Al<Cs\mathrm{C} < \mathrm{S} < \mathrm{Al} < \mathrm{Cs}C<S<Al<Cs

  7. Match with options

    This corresponds to Option C.
