Given below are two statements: Statement I : Group 13 trivalent halides get easily hydrolyzed by water due to their covalent nature. Statement II : AlCl3\mathrm{AlCl}_3AlCl3 upon hydrolysis in acidified aqueous solution forms octahedral [Al(H2O)6]3+\left[\mathrm{Al}\left(\mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{O}\right)_6\right]^{3+}[Al(H2O)6]3+ ion. In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below :
  1. A
Statement I is false but statement II is true
  2. B
Both statement I and statement II are true
  3. C
Both statement I and statement II are false
  4. D
Statement I is true but statement II is false

Correct answer: B

  1. Analyze Statement I

Statement I says: Group 13 trivalent halides get easily hydrolyzed by water due to their covalent nature.

Group 13 trihalides such as BCl3\mathrm{BCl_3}BCl3 and AlCl3\mathrm{AlCl_3}AlCl3 are generally electron-deficient and largely covalent.

Because of this covalent character, the central atom has a strong tendency to accept lone pairs from water, so hydrolysis occurs readily.

For example: AlCl3+6H2O→[Al(H2O)6]3++3Cl−\mathrm{AlCl_3 + 6H_2O \rightarrow [Al(H_2O)_6]^{3+} + 3Cl^-}AlCl3+6H2O→[Al(H2O)6]3++3Cl− followed by further hydrolytic behavior depending on the medium.

    Hence, Statement I is true.

  2. Analyze Statement II

Statement II says: AlCl3\mathrm{AlCl_3}AlCl3 upon hydrolysis in acidified aqueous solution forms octahedral [Al(H2O)6]3+\left[\mathrm{Al(H_2O)_6}\right]^{3+}[Al(H2O)6]3+ ion.

In aqueous solution, especially in acidic medium, Al3+\mathrm{Al^{3+}}Al3+ exists as the hexaaqua complex: [Al(H2O)6]3+\left[\mathrm{Al(H_2O)_6}\right]^{3+}[Al(H2O)6]3+

This complex has coordination number 6, so its geometry is octahedral.

Therefore, Statement II is also true.

  3. Choose the correct option

Since both statements are true, the correct option is: B\boxed{\text{B}}B
