In polythionic acid, H2SxO6H_2S_xO_6H2SxO6 (x = 3 to 5) the oxidation state(s) of sulphur is/are :
  1. A
    + 5 only
  2. B
    + 6 only
  3. C
    + 3 and + 5 only
  4. D
    0 and + 5 only

Correct answer: D

  1. Write the general formula

Polythionic acids have formula: H2SxO6(x=3 to 5)H_2S_xO_6 \quad (x=3\text{ to }5)H2SxO6(x=3 to 5)

We need the oxidation states of sulphur atoms.

  1. Assign known oxidation states
  • Hydrogen: +1+1+1 each
  • Oxygen: −2-2−2 each

Let the sum of oxidation states of all sulphur atoms be StotalS_{\text{total}}Stotal.

Since the molecule is neutral, 2(+1)+Stotal+6(−2)=02(+1) + S_{\text{total}} + 6(-2)=02(+1)+Stotal+6(−2)=0 2+Stotal−12=02 + S_{\text{total}} -12 =02+Stotal−12=0 Stotal=+10S_{\text{total}}=+10Stotal=+10

So, in every polythionic acid H2SxO6H_2S_xO_6H2SxO6, the total oxidation number of all sulphur atoms together is +10+10+10.

  1. Use the structure of polythionic acid

Polythionic acids have the chain structure: HO3S−S−S−⋯−S−SO3HHO_3S-S-S-\cdots-S-SO_3HHO3S−S−S−⋯−S−SO3H

That means:

  • The two terminal sulphur atoms are bonded to oxygen atoms as −SO3H-SO_3H−SO3H groups.
  • The inner sulphur atoms are only bonded to sulphur atoms.
  1. Find oxidation state of terminal sulphur atoms

For each terminal sulphur in −SO3H-SO_3H−SO3H:

  • three S−OS-OS−O bonds make sulphur positive
  • one S−SS-SS−S bond contributes 000
  • one S−OHS-OHS−OH is also counted through oxygen

This corresponds to oxidation state: +5+5+5

So, the two terminal sulphur atoms are each at +5+5+5.

Their total contribution is: 2×(+5)=+102\times(+5)=+102×(+5)=+10

  1. Find oxidation state of inner sulphur atoms

Since total oxidation state of all sulphurs is +10+10+10, the remaining inner sulphur atoms must together contribute: +10−(+10)=0+10-(+10)=0+10−(+10)=0

Each inner sulphur is bonded only to sulphur atoms. Since bonds between identical atoms contribute zero oxidation number, oxidation state of each inner sulphur=0\text{oxidation state of each inner sulphur} = 0oxidation state of each inner sulphur=0

  1. Conclusion

Thus, sulphur shows oxidation states: 0 and +50 \text{ and } +50 and +5

So the correct option is: D: 000 and +5+5+5 only.

  1. Comparison with stored correct answer

Stored correct answer = D

This matches our derived answer.
