The reaction of H3N3B3Cl3H_3N_3B_3Cl_3H3N3B3Cl3 (A) with LiBH4LiBH_4LiBH4 in tetrahydrofuran gives inorganic benzene (B). Further, the reaction of (A) with (C) leads to H3N3B3(Me)3H_3N_3B_3(Me)_3H3N3B3(Me)3. Compounds (B) and (C) respectively, are :
  1. A
    Borazine and MeBr
  2. B
    Diborane and MeMgBr
  3. C
    Boron nitride and MeBr
  4. D
    Borazine and MeMgBr

Correct answer: D

  1. Identify compound (A)

The given compound is H3N3B3Cl3H_3N_3B_3Cl_3H3N3B3Cl3 This is trichloroborazine, a borazine ring in which the three boron atoms carry chlorine substituents.

Borazine itself is: B3N3H6B_3N_3H_6B3N3H6 called inorganic benzene.

  1. Reaction of (A) with LiBH4LiBH_4LiBH4 in THF

LiBH4LiBH_4LiBH4 is a hydride donor and reduces the B−ClB-ClB−Cl bonds to B−HB-HB−H bonds.

So, H3N3B3Cl3→THFLiBH4H3N3B3H3H_3N_3B_3Cl_3 \xrightarrow[THF]{LiBH_4} H_3N_3B_3H_3H3N3B3Cl3LiBH4THFH3N3B3H3 which is the same as B3N3H6B_3N_3H_6B3N3H6 This compound is borazine, known as inorganic benzene.

Hence, B=BorazineB = \text{Borazine}B=Borazine

  1. Reaction of (A) to form H3N3B3(Me)3H_3N_3B_3(Me)_3H3N3B3(Me)3

We need to replace the three chlorine atoms attached to boron by methyl groups.

That means we need a reagent that can provide a nucleophilic methyl group, i.e. effectively Me−Me^-Me−. Such substitution on boron is done by Grignard reagent: MeMgBrMeMgBrMeMgBr

The reaction is: H3N3B3Cl3+3MeMgBr→H3N3B3(Me)3+3MgBrClH_3N_3B_3Cl_3 + 3MeMgBr \rightarrow H_3N_3B_3(Me)_3 + 3MgBrClH3N3B3Cl3+3MeMgBr→H3N3B3(Me)3+3MgBrCl

So, C=MeMgBrC = MeMgBrC=MeMgBr

  1. Match with options

We found:

  • (B)=(B) =(B)= Borazine
  • (C)=(C) =(C)= MeMgBr

This corresponds to:

Option D: Borazine and MeMgBr

  1. Comparison with stored correct answer

Stored correct answer = D

Our derived answer = D

So the answer agrees with the stored correct answer.
