Given below are two statement : one is labelled as Assertion A and the other is labelled as Reason R. Assertion A : SO2SO_2SO2​(g) is absorbed to a large extent than H2H_2H2​(g) on activated charcoal. Reason R : SO2SO_2SO2​(g) has a higher critical temperature than H2H_2H2​(g). In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below.

  1. Concept involved: adsorption on activated charcoal

    Adsorption of gases on solids is generally greater for gases that are easily liquefiable.

    A gas that is more easily liquefiable has:

    • stronger intermolecular forces,
    • higher tendency to get attracted to the surface,
    • and usually a higher critical temperature.
  2. Examine Assertion A

    Assertion: SO2(g)SO_2(g)SO2​(g) is absorbed/adsorbed to a larger extent than H2(g)H_2(g)H2​(g) on activated charcoal.

    This is correct because:

    • SO2SO_2SO2​ is a polar and easily liquefiable gas,
    • H2H_2H2​ is very light, non-polar, and much less easily liquefiable,
    • hence activated charcoal adsorbs SO2SO_2SO2​ much more strongly than H2H_2H2​.

    So, Assertion A is true.

  3. Examine Reason R

    Reason: SO2(g)SO_2(g)SO2​(g) has a higher critical temperature than H2(g)H_2(g)H2​(g).

    This is also correct.

    In fact,

    • H2H_2H2​ has a very low critical temperature,
    • SO2SO_2SO2​ has a much higher critical temperature.
  4. Check whether R explains A

    The extent of adsorption increases with increasing critical temperature because higher critical temperature means the gas is more easily liquefiable.

    Since SO2SO_2SO2​ has a higher critical temperature than H2H_2H2​, it is adsorbed more on activated charcoal.

    Therefore, Reason R correctly explains Assertion A.
