JEE MainChemistryP Block ElementsMCQ+4 / −1
Given below are two statements : one is labelled as Assertion A and the other is labelled as Reason R. Assertion A : In TlI3TlI_3TlI3, isomorphous to CsI3CsI_3CsI3, the metal is present in +1 oxidation state. Reason R : TlTlTl metal has fourteen fff electrons in its electronic configuration. In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :
  1. A
A is correct but R is not correct
  2. B
A is not correct but R is correct
  3. C
Both A and R are correct but R is NOT the correct explanation of A
  4. D
Both A and R are correct and R is the correct explanation of A

Correct answer: C

  1. Analyze Assertion A

The compound TlI3TlI_3TlI3 is said to be isomorphous with CsI3CsI_3CsI3.

    • In compounds like CsI3CsI_3CsI3, the formulation is better written as: Cs+[I3]−Cs^+[I_3]^-Cs+[I3]−
    • Here, the anion is the triiodide ion, I3−I_3^-I3−.

So, similarly, TlI3TlI_3TlI3 being isomorphous with CsI3CsI_3CsI3 means it is actually: Tl+[I3]−Tl^+[I_3]^-Tl+[I3]−

Therefore, thallium is present in the +1 oxidation state, not +3.

    Hence, Assertion A is correct.

  2. Analyze Reason R

Electronic configuration of thallium (Z=81Z=81Z=81) is: [Xe]4f145d106s26p1[Xe]4f^{14}5d^{10}6s^26p^1[Xe]4f145d106s26p1

So thallium indeed has fourteen fff electrons.

Hence, Reason R is also correct.

  3. Check whether R explains A

The real reason for the stability of Tl+Tl^+Tl+ over Tl3+Tl^{3+}Tl3+ is the inert pair effect.

    • In heavier p-block elements like Tl, the 6s26s^26s2 electrons are reluctant to participate in bonding.
    • This happens due to poor shielding by inner ddd and fff electrons, which increases effective nuclear attraction on the 6s6s6s electrons.

Although the presence of 4f144f^{14}4f14 electrons is true and contributes indirectly through poor shielding, the statement "Tl metal has fourteen fff electrons" alone is not the proper explanation of why in TlI3TlI_3TlI3 thallium is effectively in the +1 state.

Thus, both A and R are correct, but R is not the correct explanation of A.

  4. Correct option

    C\boxed{C}C
