Ionic Equilibrium question

2024 · 27 Jan · Shift 1 · Q16

JEE MainChemistryIonic EquilibriumMCQ+4 / −1
Given below are two statements : Statement (I) : Aqueous solution of ammonium carbonate is basic. Statement (II) : Acidic/basic nature of salt solution of a salt of weak acid and weak base depends on KaK_aKa and KbK_bKb value of acid and the base forming it. In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :
  1. A
Both Statement I and Statement II are correct
  2. B
Statement I is correct but Statement II is incorrect
  3. C
Both Statement I and Statement II are incorrect
  4. D
Statement I is incorrect but Statement II is correct

Correct answer: A

  1. Analyze Statement (I): Aqueous solution of ammonium carbonate is basic.

Ammonium carbonate is (NH4)2CO3(NH_4)_2CO_3(NH4)2CO3 It is a salt of:

    • weak base: NH4OHNH_4OHNH4OH (or ammonia in water)
    • weak acid: H2CO3H_2CO_3H2CO3

For salts of weak acid and weak base, the nature of the solution depends on comparison of hydrolysis tendencies, i.e. on KaK_aKa and KbK_bKb.

    Here:

    • NH4+NH_4^+NH4+ is acidic
    • CO32−CO_3^{2-}CO32− is strongly basic

Also, carbonic acid is a weak acid, so its conjugate base CO32−CO_3^{2-}CO32− has appreciable basic character. This basicity dominates over the acidity of NH4+NH_4^+NH4+.

Hence, aqueous ammonium carbonate solution is basic.

    So, Statement (I) is correct.

  2. Analyze Statement (II): Acidic/basic nature of salt solution of a salt of weak acid and weak base depends on KaK_aKa and KbK_bKb value of acid and the base forming it.

This is a standard result of salt hydrolysis.

For a salt formed from a weak acid and a weak base:

    • if Kb>KaK_b > K_aKb>Ka, solution is basic
    • if Ka>KbK_a > K_bKa>Kb, solution is acidic
    • if Ka=KbK_a = K_bKa=Kb, solution is approximately neutral

Therefore, the acidic/basic nature indeed depends on the relative values of KaK_aKa and KbK_bKb.

    So, Statement (II) is correct.

  3. Conclusion:

    Both statements are correct.

Therefore, the correct option is: A\boxed{A}A
