JEE MainChemistryElectrochemistryMCQ+4 / −1
Given below are two statements : Statement (I) : Fusion of MnO2\mathrm{MnO}_2MnO2 with KOH\mathrm{KOH}KOH and an oxidising agent gives dark green K2MnO4\mathrm{K}_2 \mathrm{MnO}_4K2MnO4. Statement (II) : Manganate ion on electrolytic oxidation in alkaline medium gives permanganate ion. In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below :
  1. A
Statement I is false but Statement II is true
  2. B
Statement I is true but Statement II is false
  3. C
Both Statement I and Statement II are false
  4. D
Both Statement I and Statement II are true

Correct answer: D

  1. Check Statement (I)

Statement (I): Fusion of MnO2\mathrm{MnO_2}MnO2 with KOH\mathrm{KOH}KOH and an oxidising agent gives dark green K2MnO4\mathrm{K_2MnO_4}K2MnO4.

This is a standard preparation of potassium manganate:

    2MnO2+4KOH+O2→2K2MnO4+2H2O2\mathrm{MnO_2} + 4\mathrm{KOH} + \mathrm{O_2} \rightarrow 2\mathrm{K_2MnO_4} + 2\mathrm{H_2O}2MnO2+4KOH+O2→2K2MnO4+2H2O

Here, manganese is oxidised from oxidation state +4+4+4 in MnO2\mathrm{MnO_2}MnO2 to +6+6+6 in manganate ion MnO42−\mathrm{MnO_4^{2-}}MnO42−.

Also, K2MnO4\mathrm{K_2MnO_4}K2MnO4 is indeed dark green in color.

    Therefore, Statement (I) is true.

  2. Check Statement (II)

Statement (II): Manganate ion on electrolytic oxidation in alkaline medium gives permanganate ion.

Manganate ion is MnO42−\mathrm{MnO_4^{2-}}MnO42− and permanganate ion is MnO4−\mathrm{MnO_4^-}MnO4−.

    On oxidation in alkaline medium:

    MnO42−→MnO4−+e−\mathrm{MnO_4^{2-}} \rightarrow \mathrm{MnO_4^-} + e^-MnO42−→MnO4−+e−

Thus, manganate is converted into permanganate by electrolytic oxidation.

Therefore, Statement (II) is also true.

  3. Choose the correct option

Since both statements are true, the correct option is:

    D\boxed{\text{D}}D

  4. Comparison with stored answer

    Stored correct answer: D\mathrm{D}D

Our derived answer matches the stored answer.
