Correct answer: A

  1. Idea: A species is a good oxidizing agent if it gets reduced easily, i.e. it has a strong tendency to gain electrons.

  2. In lanthanoids, the common stable oxidation state is +3+3+3. So:

    • Species in higher oxidation states like +4+4+4 tend to get reduced to +3+3+3 and hence can act as oxidizing agents.
    • Species in lower oxidation states like +2+2+2 tend to get oxidized to +3+3+3 and hence usually act as reducing agents, not oxidizing agents.
  3. Now examine each species:

    A. Sm2+\mathrm{Sm}^{2+}Sm2+

    • Sm2+\mathrm{Sm}^{2+}Sm2+ tends to get oxidized to Sm3+\mathrm{Sm}^{3+}Sm3+.
    • Therefore, it behaves as a reducing agent, not an oxidizing agent.
    • Not correct.

    B. Ce2+\mathrm{Ce}^{2+}Ce2+

    • Ce2+\mathrm{Ce}^{2+}Ce2+ is an unusually low oxidation state and tends to get oxidized to Ce3+\mathrm{Ce}^{3+}Ce3+.
    • So it is also a reducing agent.
    • Not correct.

    C. Ce4+\mathrm{Ce}^{4+}Ce4+

    • Ce4+\mathrm{Ce}^{4+}Ce4+ readily gets reduced to Ce3+\mathrm{Ce}^{3+}Ce3+.
    • Hence, it is a good oxidizing agent.
    • Correct.

    D. Tb4+\mathrm{Tb}^{4+}Tb4+

    • Tb4+\mathrm{Tb}^{4+}Tb4+ also tends to get reduced to Tb3+\mathrm{Tb}^{3+}Tb3+.
    • Therefore, it acts as an oxidizing agent.
    • Correct.
  4. Thus, the good oxidizing agents are: Ce4+ and Tb4+\mathrm{Ce}^{4+} \text{ and } \mathrm{Tb}^{4+}Ce4+ and Tb4+

  5. So the correct option is: A: C and D only\boxed{\text{A: C and D only}}A: C and D only

  6. Comparison with stored answer: Stored correct answer is A, which matches the derived answer.
