JEE MainChemistryCoordination CompoundsMCQ+4 / −1
Given below are two statements : Statement (I) : In octahedral complexes, when Δ0P\Delta_0PΔ0P low spin complexes are formed. Statement (II) : In tetrahedral complexes because of$\Delta_t In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :
  1. A
Both Statement I and Statement II are incorrect
  2. B
Statement I is correct but Statement II is incorrect
  3. C
Statement I is incorrect but Statement II is correct
  4. D
Both Statement I and Statement II are correct

Correct answer: D

  1. Interpret Statement (I)

The statement is clearly referring to the usual criterion for high spin/low spin in octahedral complexes:

    • If the crystal field splitting energy is greater than pairing energy, i.e. Δo>P,\Delta_o > P,Δo>P, electrons prefer to pair in the lower-energy t2gt_{2g}t2g orbitals.
    • Hence, low spin complexes are formed.

    Therefore, Statement (I) is correct.

  2. Interpret Statement (II)

For tetrahedral complexes, the crystal field splitting is much smaller than in octahedral complexes: Δt=49Δo\Delta_t = \frac{4}{9}\Delta_oΔt=94Δo so generally, Δt<P.\Delta_t < P.Δt<P.

Because the splitting is small compared to pairing energy, electrons prefer to remain unpaired rather than pair up. Thus, tetrahedral complexes are generally high spin.

So the intended Statement (II) is also correct.

  3. Choose the correct option

    • Statement (I): Correct
    • Statement (II): Correct

Hence, the correct option is: D: Both Statement I and Statement II are correct.

  4. Comparison with stored answer

    Stored correct answer: D

    Our derived answer: D

    They match.
