The primary and secondary valencies of cobalt respectively in [Co(NH3)5Cl]Cl2\mathrm{[Co(NH_3)_5Cl]Cl_2}[Co(NH3)5Cl]Cl2 are :
  1. A
    2 and 8
  2. B
    2 and 6
  3. C
    3 and 5
  4. D
    3 and 6

Correct answer: D

  1. Recall Werner’s theory

    • Primary valency = oxidation state of the metal ion.
    • Secondary valency = coordination number of the metal ion.
  2. Given complex [Co(NH3)5Cl]Cl2[Co(NH_3)_5Cl]Cl_2[Co(NH3)5Cl]Cl2

    Here:

    • Inside the coordination sphere: [Co(NH3)5Cl]2+[Co(NH_3)_5Cl]^{2+}[Co(NH3)5Cl]2+
    • Outside the coordination sphere: 2Cl−2Cl^-2Cl−
  3. Find the oxidation state of cobalt Let oxidation state of Co be xxx.

    In [Co(NH3)5Cl]2+:[Co(NH_3)_5Cl]^{2+}:[Co(NH3)5Cl]2+:

    • NH3NH_3NH3 is a neutral ligand, so contribution = 000
    • coordinated ClClCl contributes −1-1−1

    Therefore, x+5(0)+(−1)=+2x + 5(0) + (-1) = +2x+5(0)+(−1)=+2 x−1=2x - 1 = 2x−1=2 x=+3x = +3x=+3

So, the primary valency of cobalt is 3.

  4. Find the coordination number Ligands directly attached to cobalt are:

    • 555 molecules of NH3NH_3NH3
    • 111 ligand ClClCl

    Total number of coordinate bonds: 5+1=65 + 1 = 65+1=6

So, the secondary valency is 6.

  5. Match with options

    • Primary valency = 333
    • Secondary valency = 666

Hence the correct option is: D\boxed{D}D

  6. Comparison with stored answer Stored correct answer: D

    This matches our derived answer.
