Match the List - I with List - II

List - I
(Classification of molecules based on octet rule)
List - II
(Example)
(A) Molecules obeying octet rule (I) NO,NO2\mathrm{NO}, \mathrm{NO}_2NO,NO2
(B) Molecules with incomplete octet (II) BCl3,AlCl3\mathrm{BCl}_3, \mathrm{AlCl}_3BCl3,AlCl3
(C) Molecules with incomplete octet with odd electron (III) H2SO4,PCl5\mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{SO}_4, \mathrm{PCl}_5H2SO4,PCl5
(D) Molecules with expanded octet (IV) CCl4,CO2\mathrm{CCl}_4, \mathrm{CO}_2CCl4,CO2

Choose the correct answer from the options given below:

  1. A
    A-IV, B-I, C-III, D-II
  2. B
    A-II, B-IV, C-III, D-I
  3. C
    A-IV, B-II, C-I, D-III
  4. D
    A-III, B-II, C-I, D-IV

Correct answer: C

  1. Identify each class in List I
  • (A) Molecules obeying octet rule: central atom completes 8 electrons.
  • (B) Molecules with incomplete octet: central atom has fewer than 8 electrons.
  • (C) Molecules with incomplete octet with odd electron: odd-electron molecules, so octet cannot be completed.
  • (D) Molecules with expanded octet: central atom has more than 8 electrons.

  1. Match with examples in List II

(A) Molecules obeying octet rule

Examples: CCl4,CO2\mathrm{CCl}_4, \mathrm{CO}_2CCl4,CO2

  • In CCl4\mathrm{CCl}_4CCl4, carbon has 4 bonds ⇒8\Rightarrow 8⇒8 electrons around C.
  • In CO2\mathrm{CO}_2CO2, carbon forms two double bonds ⇒8\Rightarrow 8⇒8 electrons around C.

So, A→IVA \to IVA→IV

(B) Molecules with incomplete octet

Examples: BCl3,AlCl3\mathrm{BCl}_3, \mathrm{AlCl}_3BCl3,AlCl3

  • In BCl3\mathrm{BCl}_3BCl3, boron has only 6 electrons around it.
  • In AlCl3\mathrm{AlCl}_3AlCl3, aluminium also has incomplete octet.

So, B→IIB \to IIB→II

(C) Molecules with incomplete octet with odd electron

Examples: NO,NO2\mathrm{NO}, \mathrm{NO}_2NO,NO2

  • Both have odd total number of valence electrons.
  • Hence they are odd-electron molecules and cannot satisfy complete octet for all atoms.

So, C→IC \to IC→I

(D) Molecules with expanded octet

Examples: H2SO4,PCl5\mathrm{H}_2\mathrm{SO}_4, \mathrm{PCl}_5H2SO4,PCl5

  • In PCl5\mathrm{PCl}_5PCl5, phosphorus has 10 electrons around it.
  • In H2SO4\mathrm{H}_2\mathrm{SO}_4H2SO4, sulfur can have expanded valence shell.

So, D→IIID \to IIID→III

  1. Final matching

A−IV,  B−II,  C−I,  D−IIIA-IV,\; B-II,\; C-I,\; D-IIIA−IV,B−II,C−I,D−III

This corresponds to Option C.

  1. Comparison with stored answer

Stored correct answer: C

Derived answer: C

Hence, the derived answer agrees with the stored answer.
