Given below are two statements: Statement I: Fructose does not contain an aldehydic group but still reduces Tollen's reagent Statement II: In the presence of base, fructose undergoes rearrangement to give glucose. In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below
  1. A
Statement I is true but Statement II is false
  2. B
Statement I is false but Statement II is true
  3. C
Both Statement I and Statement II are true
  4. D
Both Statement I and Statement II are false

Correct answer: C

  1. Analyze Statement I

Fructose is a ketohexose, so in its open-chain form it contains a ketone group and not an aldehydic group.

However, fructose still gives a positive test with Tollen's reagent.

This happens because in the basic medium of Tollen's reagent, fructose undergoes enolization and rearranges into aldoses such as glucose and mannose, which do contain an aldehydic group and can reduce Tollen's reagent.

    Therefore, Statement I is true.

  2. Analyze Statement II

In the presence of base, fructose undergoes Lobry de Bruyn–van Ekenstein rearrangement.

Under this rearrangement, fructose converts into glucose and mannose through an enediol intermediate.

So the statement that fructose rearranges to give glucose in the presence of base is true.

    Therefore, Statement II is true.

  3. Conclusion

Since both statements are true, the correct option is:

    C\boxed{\text{C}}C
