Correct answer: 2

  1. Write the structure of threonine

Threonine is an amino acid with the structure: CH3−CH(OH)−CH(NH2)−COOH\mathrm{CH_3-CH(OH)-CH(NH_2)-COOH}CH3−CH(OH)−CH(NH2)−COOH

  2. Identify possible chiral centres

A chiral centre is a carbon atom attached to four different groups.

  3. Check each relevant carbon atom

    • Carbon-2 (the α\alphaα-carbon): CH(NH2)\mathrm{CH(NH_2)}CH(NH2) It is attached to:

      • NH2\mathrm{NH_2}NH2
      • H\mathrm{H}H
      • COOH\mathrm{COOH}COOH
      • CH(OH)CH3\mathrm{CH(OH)CH_3}CH(OH)CH3

These are four different groups, so this carbon is chiral.

    • Carbon-3: CH(OH)\mathrm{CH(OH)}CH(OH) It is attached to:

      • OH\mathrm{OH}OH
      • H\mathrm{H}H
      • CH3\mathrm{CH_3}CH3
      • CH(NH2)COOH\mathrm{CH(NH_2)COOH}CH(NH2)COOH

These are also four different groups, so this carbon is chiral.

    • Methyl carbon CH3\mathrm{CH_3}CH3 is not chiral.

    • Carboxyl carbon is sp2sp^2sp2 hybridized, so it is not chiral.

  4. Total number of chiral centres

Therefore, threonine contains: 222 chiral centres.

  5. Comparison with stored correct answer

    Stored correct answer = 222

Our derived answer also = 222, so they agree.
