Correct answer: 60

  1. Write the balanced Claisen–Schmidt reaction

Dibenzalacetone is formed by condensation of acetone with benzaldehyde:

2 C6H5CHO+CH3COCH3→C17H14O+2 H2O2\,\text{C}_6\text{H}_5\text{CHO} + \text{CH}_3\text{COCH}_3 \rightarrow \text{C}_{17}\text{H}_{14}\text{O} + 2\,\text{H}_2\text{O}2C6H5CHO+CH3COCH3→C17H14O+2H2O

So, 222 moles of benzaldehyde give 111 mole of dibenzalacetone.

  1. Calculate moles of benzaldehyde used

Molar mass of benzaldehyde, C7H6O\text{C}_7\text{H}_6\text{O}C7H6O:

7×12+6×1+16=84+6+16=106 g mol−17\times 12 + 6\times 1 + 16 = 84 + 6 + 16 = 106\,\text{g mol}^{-1}7×12+6×1+16=84+6+16=106g mol−1

Given mass of benzaldehyde =5.3 g= 5.3\,\text{g}=5.3g

n(benzaldehyde)=5.3106=0.05 moln(\text{benzaldehyde}) = \frac{5.3}{106} = 0.05\,\text{mol}n(benzaldehyde)=1065.3=0.05mol

  1. Use stoichiometry to find theoretical moles of dibenzalacetone

From the reaction:

2 mol benzaldehyde→1 mol dibenzalacetone2\,\text{mol benzaldehyde} \rightarrow 1\,\text{mol dibenzalacetone}2mol benzaldehyde→1mol dibenzalacetone

Therefore,

n(dibenzalacetone)=0.052=0.025 moln(\text{dibenzalacetone}) = \frac{0.05}{2} = 0.025\,\text{mol}n(dibenzalacetone)=20.05=0.025mol

  1. Calculate molar mass of dibenzalacetone

Formula of dibenzalacetone is C17H14O\text{C}_{17}\text{H}_{14}\text{O}C17H14O.

17×12+14×1+16=204+14+16=234 g mol−117\times 12 + 14\times 1 + 16 = 204 + 14 + 16 = 234\,\text{g mol}^{-1}17×12+14×1+16=204+14+16=234g mol−1

  1. Calculate theoretical mass of dibenzalacetone

mtheoretical=0.025×234=5.85 gm_{\text{theoretical}} = 0.025 \times 234 = 5.85\,\text{g}mtheoretical=0.025×234=5.85g

  1. Calculate percentage yield

Actual mass obtained =3.51 g= 3.51\,\text{g}=3.51g

%yield=3.515.85×100\%\text{yield} = \frac{3.51}{5.85}\times 100%yield=5.853.51×100

%yield=60%\%\text{yield} = 60\%%yield=60%

  1. Final answer

60\boxed{60}60
