Hydrolysis of which compound will give carbolic acid?
  1. A
    Cumene
  2. B
    Benzenediazonium chloride
  3. C
    Benzal chloride
  4. D
    Ethylene glycol ketal
View written solutionFree

Correct answer: B

  1. Identify what “carbolic acid” means

Carbolic acid is the common name for phenol, i.e. C6H5OH\mathrm{C_6H_5OH}C6H5OH.

  2. Check each option for hydrolysis

    Option A: Cumene

    Cumene is isopropyl benzene, C6H5CH(CH3)2\mathrm{C_6H_5CH(CH_3)_2}C6H5CH(CH3)2.

    • On oxidation, cumene gives cumene hydroperoxide, which on acid cleavage gives phenol.
    • But simple hydrolysis of cumene does not give phenol.

    So, A is incorrect.

    Option B: Benzenediazonium chloride

    Benzenediazonium chloride is C6H5N2+Cl−\mathrm{C_6H_5N_2^+Cl^-}C6H5N2+Cl−.

On hydrolysis (usually warming with water):

    C6H5N2+Cl−+H2O→C6H5OH+N2+HCl\mathrm{C_6H_5N_2^+Cl^- + H_2O \rightarrow C_6H_5OH + N_2 + HCl}C6H5N2+Cl−+H2O→C6H5OH+N2+HCl

This directly gives phenol (carbolic acid).

    So, B is correct.

    Option C: Benzal chloride

    Benzal chloride is C6H5CHCl2\mathrm{C_6H_5CHCl_2}C6H5CHCl2.

Gem-dihalides on hydrolysis form carbonyl compounds. Thus:

    C6H5CHCl2→hydrolysisC6H5CHO\mathrm{C_6H_5CHCl_2 \xrightarrow{hydrolysis} C_6H_5CHO}C6H5CHCl2hydrolysisC6H5CHO

    Product is benzaldehyde, not phenol.

    So, C is incorrect.

    Option D: Ethylene glycol ketal

Ketals on hydrolysis regenerate the parent carbonyl compound and ethylene glycol.

    They do not give phenol.

    So, D is incorrect.

  3. Final conclusion

The compound whose hydrolysis gives carbolic acid (phenol) is:

    B: Benzenediazonium chloride\boxed{\text{B: Benzenediazonium chloride}}B: Benzenediazonium chloride
  4. Comparison with stored correct answer

    Stored correct answer = B.

My derived answer also = B, so they agree.
