A football of radius R is kept on a hole of radius r (r < R) made on a plank kept horizontally. One end of the plank is now lifted so that it gets tilted making an angle θ\thetaθ from the horizontal as shown in the figure below. The maximum value of θ\thetaθ so that the football does not start rolling down the plank satisfies (figure is schematic and not drawn to scale) JEE Advanced 2020 Paper 1 Offline Physics - Laws of Motion Question 16 English

Correct answer: A

  1. Interpret the geometry

A football (sphere) of radius RRR rests over a circular hole of radius rrr.

Let:

  • OOO = center of the sphere,
  • PPP = point on the rim of the hole where the sphere touches,
  • the vertical axis pass through the center of the hole.

Since the sphere touches the rim, the distance from the center of the sphere to the rim point is the radius of the sphere:

OP=ROP = ROP=R

The horizontal distance of the rim point from the vertical axis is the radius of the hole:

exthorizontaldistance=r ext{horizontal distance} = rexthorizontaldistance=r

  1. Form the right triangle

Consider the right triangle formed by:

  • hypotenuse OP=ROP = ROP=R,
  • opposite side to angle θ\thetaθ equal to rrr.

If θ\thetaθ is the angle made by OPOPOP with the vertical, then

sin⁡θ=oppositehypotenuse=rR\sin\theta = \frac{\text{opposite}}{\text{hypotenuse}} = \frac{r}{R}sinθ=hypotenuseopposite=Rr

  1. Match with the options

Thus,

sin⁡θ=rR\sin\theta = \frac{r}{R}sinθ=Rr

So the correct option is:

A. sin⁡θ=rR\sin\theta = \dfrac{r}{R}sinθ=Rr

  1. Comparison with stored answer
