Why the table moves every year

  1. 01

    Per shift, not per paper

NTA computes your percentile inside your own shift, then merges the shifts on that normalised number.

  2. 02

    Relative, not absolute

Your percentile is the share of candidates at or below you, so it moves with how your shift performed.

  3. 03

    Different every year

Paper difficulty and the size of the candidate pool both shift the table, which is why all four years are here.

One question from the actual paper.

The tables come from these papers. This is what a question in them looks like.

How percentile works

How is the JEE Main percentile calculated?

NTA computes it per shift. Your percentile is 100 times the number of candidates in your shift who scored at or below you, divided by the total candidates in that shift. Scores from different shifts are then merged using this normalised percentile, which is why raw marks alone do not fix your percentile.

Why do two students with the same marks get different percentiles?

Because they sat different shifts. Percentile is relative to the shift you were in, so the same raw score in a shift where everyone did well earns a lower percentile than in a shift where the paper hit harder.

What percentile is 200 marks in JEE Main?

In 2026, 190 to 209 marks fell in the 99.41 to 99.69 percentile band. In 2024, 201 to 218 marks fell in 99.84 to 99.92. Both are comfortably inside the JEE Advanced qualifying range in a normal year.

Does a 99 percentile mean I am in the top 1 percent?

Yes, that is exactly what it means. A 99 percentile puts you ahead of 99 percent of candidates, which against the roughly 15 lakh who appeared in 2026 is about 15,000 candidates ahead of you.

Are these tables official NTA data?

NTA does not publish a marks to percentile table. These are compiled from NTA normalisation records and shift level score data by coaching institutes and education portals, and the compiler is named under each year. Treat them as close guides, not exact conversions.
