A transverse wave is represented by
y = Asin(ω\omegaωt −-− kx). For what value of the wavelength is the wave velocity equal to the maximum particle velocity ?
  1. A
    πA/2\pi A/2πA/2
  2. B
    πA\pi AπA
  3. C

Correct answer: C

y = A sin (ω\omega ωt–kx)

Particle velocity,

vp=dydt=Aωcos⁡(ωt−kx){v_p} = {{dy} \over {dt}} = A\omega \cos \left( {\omega t - kx} \right)vp=dtdy=Aωcos(ωt−kx)

∴vp max⁡=Aω\therefore {v_{p\,\max }} = A\omega∴vpmax=Aω

wave velocity = ωk{\omega \over k}kω

∴\therefore∴ Aω=ωkA\omega = {\omega \over k}Aω=kω

i.e, A=1kA = {1 \over k}A=k1 But k=2πλk = {{2\pi } \over \lambda }k=λ2π

∴λ=2πA \therefore \lambda = 2\pi A∴λ=2πA
