If the magnetic dipole moment of an atom of diamagnetic material, paramagnetic material and ferromagnetic material are denoted by μ\muμd, μ\muμp and μ\muμf respectively, then
  1. A
    μd=0{\mu _d} = 0μd=0 and μ\muμp ≠\ne= 0
  2. B
    μ\muμd ≠\ne= 0 and μ\muμp = 0
  3. C
    μ\muμp = 0 and μ\muμf ≠\ne= 0
  4. D
    μ\muμd ≠\ne= 0 and μ\muμf ≠\ne= 0.

Correct answer: A

The magnetic dipole moment of diamagnetic material is zero as each of its pair of electrons have opposite spins, i.e., μ\mu μd = 0.

Paramagnetic substances have dipole moment >\gt > 0, i.e. μ\mu μp ≠\ne= 0, because of excess of electrons in its molecules spinning in the same direction.

Ferro-magnetic substances are very strong magnets and they also have permanent magnetic moment, i.e. μ\mu μf ≠\ne= 0.
