The energy of a hydrogen atom in the ground state is −-− 13.6 eV. The energy of a He+ ion in the first excited state will be
  1. A
    −-− 13.6 eV
  2. B
    −-− 27.2 eV
  3. C
    −-− 54.4 eV
  4. D
    −-− 6.8 eV

Correct answer: A

Energy of a H-like atom in it's nth state is given by,

En = −13.6n2Z2 - {{13.6} \over {{n^2}}}{Z^2}−n213.6Z2

For, first excited state of He+, n = 2, Z = 2

∴\therefore∴ EHe+ = −13.622×22 - {{13.6} \over {{2^2}}} \times {2^2}−2213.6×22 = -13.6 eV
