Which of the following statements is correct for the spontaneous adsorption of a gas?
  1. A
    Δ\DeltaΔS is negative and, therefore Δ\DeltaΔH should be highly positive.
  2. B
    Δ\DeltaΔS is negative and therefore, Δ\DeltaΔH should be highly negative.
  3. C
    Δ\DeltaΔS is positive and therefore, Δ\DeltaΔH should be negative .
  4. D
    Δ\DeltaΔS is positive and therefore, Δ\DeltaΔH should also be highly positive.

Correct answer: B

Using Gibb's-Helmholtz equation,

ΔG=ΔH−TΔS\Delta G = \Delta H - T\Delta SΔG=ΔH−TΔS

During adsorption of a gas, entropy decreases i.e, Δ\Delta ΔS < 0

For spontaneous adsorption, Δ\Delta ΔG should be negative, which is possible when Δ\Delta ΔH is highly negative.
