A tuning fork A of unknown frequency produces 5 beats/s with a fork of known frequency 340 Hz. When fork A is filed, the beat frequency decreases to 2 beats/s. What is the frequency of fork A?
  1. A
    335 Hz
  2. B
    345 Hz
  3. C
    338 Hz
  4. D
    342 Hz

Correct answer: A

  1. Initial beat condition

For two tuning forks of frequencies fAf_AfA and 340 Hz340\,\text{Hz}340Hz, the beat frequency is

∣fA−340∣=5|f_A - 340| = 5∣fA−340∣=5

So the possible frequencies of fork AAA are:

fA=345 HzorfA=335 Hzf_A = 345\,\text{Hz} \quad \text{or} \quad f_A = 335\,\text{Hz}fA=345HzorfA=335Hz

  1. Effect of filing a tuning fork

When a tuning fork is filed, its prongs become lighter, so its frequency increases.

Thus after filing, the frequency of fork AAA increases.

  1. Use the new beat frequency

After filing, the beat frequency decreases from 555 to 222.

That means the frequency of fork AAA moved closer to 340 Hz340\,\text{Hz}340Hz when it increased.

Let us test both possibilities:

  • If initially fA=335 Hzf_A = 335\,\text{Hz}fA=335Hz, then after filing it increases toward 340 Hz340\,\text{Hz}340Hz, so the beat frequency can decrease from 555 to 222. This is consistent.
  • If initially fA=345 Hzf_A = 345\,\text{Hz}fA=345Hz, then after filing it increases further away from 340 Hz340\,\text{Hz}340Hz, so the beat frequency would increase, not decrease. This is not consistent.

Hence,

fA=335 Hzf_A = 335\,\text{Hz}fA=335Hz

  1. Check options
  • A: 335 Hz335\,\text{Hz}335Hz ✅
  • B: 345 Hz345\,\text{Hz}345Hz ❌
  • C: 338 Hz338\,\text{Hz}338Hz ❌
  • D: 342 Hz342\,\text{Hz}342Hz ❌

Therefore, the correct option is A.
