In a Young's double slits experiment, the ratio of amplitude of light coming from slits is 2:12: 12:1. The ratio of the maximum to minimum intensity in the interference pattern is:
  1. A
    25 : 9
  2. B
    9 : 1
  3. C
    9 : 4
  4. D
    2 : 1

Correct answer: B

  1. In Young’s double slit experiment, if the amplitudes of the two waves are a1a_1a1 and a2a_2a2, then:

Imax⁡=(a1+a2)2I_{\max} = (a_1+a_2)^2Imax=(a1+a2)2 Imin⁡=(a1−a2)2I_{\min} = (a_1-a_2)^2Imin=(a1−a2)2

  1. Given amplitude ratio:

a1:a2=2:1a_1:a_2 = 2:1a1:a2=2:1

Let

a1=2a,a2=aa_1=2a, \quad a_2=aa1=2a,a2=a

  1. Maximum intensity:

Imax⁡=(2a+a)2=(3a)2=9a2I_{\max} = (2a+a)^2 = (3a)^2 = 9a^2Imax=(2a+a)2=(3a)2=9a2

  1. Minimum intensity:

Imin⁡=(2a−a)2=a2I_{\min} = (2a-a)^2 = a^2Imin=(2a−a)2=a2

  1. Therefore, the ratio is:

Imax⁡Imin⁡=9a2a2=9\frac{I_{\max}}{I_{\min}} = \frac{9a^2}{a^2} = 9IminImax=a29a2=9

So,

Imax⁡:Imin⁡=9:1I_{\max}:I_{\min} = 9:1Imax:Imin=9:1

  1. Comparing with the options:
  • A: 25:925:925:9 ❌
  • B: 9:19:19:1 ✅
  • C: 9:49:49:4 ❌
  • D: 2:12:12:1 ❌

Hence, the correct answer is Option B.
