In Young's double slit experiment the two slits are 0.6 mm distance apart. Interference pattern is observed on a screen at a distance 80 cm from the slits. The first dark fringe is observed on the screen directly opposite to one of the slits. The wavelength of light will be ‾\underline{\hspace{2cm}} nm.

Correct answer: 450

  1. Given data
  • Slit separation: d=0.6 mm=0.6×10−3 md = 0.6\text{ mm} = 0.6 \times 10^{-3}\text{ m}d=0.6 mm=0.6×10−3 m
  • Screen distance: D=80 cm=0.8 mD = 80\text{ cm} = 0.8\text{ m}D=80 cm=0.8 m
  • The first dark fringe is observed directly opposite to one of the slits.
  1. Interpret the condition

In YDSE, if the point directly opposite to one slit is considered, its distance from the central line is:

y=d2y = \frac{d}{2}y=2d

This is because the central bright fringe lies opposite the midpoint of the two slits, so each slit is at a transverse distance d/2d/2d/2 from the center.

Thus,

y=0.6×10−32=0.3×10−3 my = \frac{0.6\times 10^{-3}}{2} = 0.3\times 10^{-3}\text{ m}y=20.6×10−3=0.3×10−3 m

  1. Condition for first dark fringe

Position of the first dark fringe is:

y1=λD2dy_1 = \frac{\lambda D}{2d}y1=2dλD

Given that this first dark fringe occurs at y=d/2y = d/2y=d/2, so:

λD2d=d2\frac{\lambda D}{2d} = \frac{d}{2}2dλD=2d

Multiply both sides by 222:

λDd=d\frac{\lambda D}{d} = ddλD=d

So,

λ=d2D\lambda = \frac{d^2}{D}λ=Dd2

  1. Substitute values

λ=(0.6×10−3)20.8\lambda = \frac{(0.6\times 10^{-3})^2}{0.8}λ=0.8(0.6×10−3)2

=0.36×10−60.8= \frac{0.36\times 10^{-6}}{0.8}=0.80.36×10−6

=0.45×10−6 m= 0.45\times 10^{-6}\text{ m}=0.45×10−6 m

=4.5×10−7 m= 4.5\times 10^{-7}\text{ m}=4.5×10−7 m

  1. Convert to nm

1 nm=10−9 m1\text{ nm} = 10^{-9}\text{ m}1 nm=10−9 m

So,

λ=4.5×10−7 m=450 nm\lambda = 4.5\times 10^{-7}\text{ m} = 450\text{ nm}λ=4.5×10−7 m=450 nm

  1. Comparison with stored answer

Derived answer = 450450450

Stored correct answer = 450450450

They match.
