In Young's double slit experiment, if the source of light changes from orange to blue then :
  1. A
the central bright fringe will become a dark fringe.
  2. B
the distance between consecutive fringes will decrease.
  3. C
the distance between consecutive fringes will increases.
  4. D
the intensity of the minima will increase.

Correct answer: B

  1. In Young’s double slit experiment, the fringe width is given by

β=λDd\beta = \frac{\lambda D}{d}β=dλD

where:

  • λ\lambdaλ = wavelength of light
  • DDD = distance between slit and screen
  • ddd = separation between slits
  1. When the source changes from orange to blue, the wavelength decreases because blue light has a smaller wavelength than orange light:

λblue<λorange\lambda_{\text{blue}} < \lambda_{\text{orange}}λblue<λorange

  1. Since fringe width β\betaβ is directly proportional to wavelength λ\lambdaλ,

β∝λ\beta \propto \lambdaβ∝λ

therefore, on changing from orange to blue,

βblue<βorange\beta_{\text{blue}} < \beta_{\text{orange}}βblue<βorange

So the distance between consecutive fringes decreases.

  1. Now check the options:
  • A: Central bright fringe will become dark fringe.
False. The central fringe remains bright because path difference at the center is zero.

  • B: Distance between consecutive fringes will decrease.
    True.

  • C: Distance between consecutive fringes will increase.
    False.

  • D: Intensity of minima will increase.
False. Ideal minima remain zero intensity in YDSE.

Therefore, the correct option is:

B\boxed{\text{B}}B
