JEE MainPhysicsUnits and MeasurementsNumerical+4 / −1
Three students S1, S2 and S3 perform an experiment for determining the acceleration due to gravity (g) using a simple pendulum. They use different lengths of pendulum and record time for different number of oscillations. The observations are as shown in the table.

1 64.0 8 128.0 16.0
2 64.0 4 64.0 16.0
3 20.0 4 36.0 9.0

(Least count of length = 0.1 cm and Least count for time = 0.1 s)

If E1, E2 and E3 are the percentage errors in 'g' for students 1, 2 and 3 respectively, then the minimum percentage error is obtained by student no. ‾\underline{\hspace{2cm}}.

Correct answer: 1

  1. For a simple pendulum,

T=2πlg⇒g=4π2lT2T = 2\pi\sqrt{\frac{l}{g}} \quad \Rightarrow \quad g = \frac{4\pi^2 l}{T^2}T=2πgl⇒g=T24π2l

Hence, the fractional error in ggg is

Δgg=Δll+2ΔTT\frac{\Delta g}{g} = \frac{\Delta l}{l} + 2\frac{\Delta T}{T}gΔg=lΔl+2TΔT

So percentage error is

% error in g=(Δll+2ΔTT)×100\%\text{ error in } g = \left(\frac{\Delta l}{l} + 2\frac{\Delta T}{T}\right)\times 100% error in g=(lΔl+2TΔT)×100

  1. Error in length measurement:

Least count of length =0.1 cm=0.1\,\text{cm}=0.1cm, so

Δl=0.1 cm\Delta l = 0.1\,\text{cm}Δl=0.1cm

  1. Error in time period:

Since T=tnT = \dfrac{t}{n}T=nt, where ttt is total time for nnn oscillations,

ΔTT=Δtt\frac{\Delta T}{T} = \frac{\Delta t}{t}TΔT=tΔt

because nnn is counted exactly.

Given least count of time =0.1 s=0.1\,\text{s}=0.1s,

Δt=0.1 s\Delta t = 0.1\,\text{s}Δt=0.1s

Now calculate for each student.

Student 1

Given:

l=64.0 cm,t=128.0 s,n=8,T=16.0 sl=64.0\,\text{cm}, \quad t=128.0\,\text{s}, \quad n=8, \quad T=16.0\,\text{s}l=64.0cm,t=128.0s,n=8,T=16.0s

Fractional error:

Δgg=0.164.0+2⋅0.1128.0\frac{\Delta g}{g} = \frac{0.1}{64.0} + 2\cdot \frac{0.1}{128.0}gΔg=64.00.1+2⋅128.00.1

=0.0015625+0.0015625=0.003125= 0.0015625 + 0.0015625 = 0.003125=0.0015625+0.0015625=0.003125

Percentage error:

E1=0.3125%E_1 = 0.3125\%E1=0.3125%

Student 2

Given:

l=64.0 cm,t=64.0 s,n=4,T=16.0 sl=64.0\,\text{cm}, \quad t=64.0\,\text{s}, \quad n=4, \quad T=16.0\,\text{s}l=64.0cm,t=64.0s,n=4,T=16.0s

Fractional error:

Δgg=0.164.0+2⋅0.164.0\frac{\Delta g}{g} = \frac{0.1}{64.0} + 2\cdot \frac{0.1}{64.0}gΔg=64.00.1+2⋅64.00.1

=0.0015625+0.003125=0.0046875= 0.0015625 + 0.003125 = 0.0046875=0.0015625+0.003125=0.0046875

Percentage error:

E2=0.46875%E_2 = 0.46875\%E2=0.46875%

Student 3

Given:

l=20.0 cm,t=36.0 s,n=4,T=9.0 sl=20.0\,\text{cm}, \quad t=36.0\,\text{s}, \quad n=4, \quad T=9.0\,\text{s}l=20.0cm,t=36.0s,n=4,T=9.0s

Fractional error:

Δgg=0.120.0+2⋅0.136.0\frac{\Delta g}{g} = \frac{0.1}{20.0} + 2\cdot \frac{0.1}{36.0}gΔg=20.00.1+2⋅36.00.1

=0.005+0.005555…=0.010555…= 0.005 + 0.005555\ldots = 0.010555\ldots=0.005+0.005555…=0.010555…

Percentage error:

E3≈1.0556%E_3 \approx 1.0556\%E3≈1.0556%

  1. Compare the errors:

E1=0.3125%,E2=0.46875%,E3≈1.0556%E_1 = 0.3125\%, \quad E_2 = 0.46875\%, \quad E_3 \approx 1.0556\%E1=0.3125%,E2=0.46875%,E3≈1.0556%

Thus, the minimum percentage error is obtained by student 1.

1\boxed{1}1
