A vessel with square cross-section and height of 6 m is vertically partitioned. A small window of 100 cm2100 \mathrm{~cm}^2100 cm2 with hinged door is fitted at a depth of 3 m in the partition wall. One part of the vessel is filled completely with water and the other side is filled with the liquid having density 1.5×103 kg/m31.5 \times 10^3 \mathrm{~kg} / \mathrm{m}^31.5×103 kg/m3. What force one needs to apply on the hinged door so that it does not get opened ?  (Acceleration due to gravity =10 m/s2 ) \text { (Acceleration due to gravity }=10 \mathrm{~m} / \mathrm{s}^2 \text { ) } (Acceleration due to gravity =10 m/s2 )

Correct answer: 150

  1. Given data
  • Area of window: A=100 cm2=100×10−4=10−2 m2A = 100\,\text{cm}^2 = 100 \times 10^{-4} = 10^{-2}\,\text{m}^2A=100cm2=100×10−4=10−2m2
  • Depth of window below liquid surface: h=3 mh = 3\,\text{m}h=3m
  • Density of water: ρw=1000 kg/m3\rho_w = 1000\,\text{kg/m}^3ρw=1000kg/m3
  • Density of other liquid: ρl=1.5×103=1500 kg/m3\rho_l = 1.5 \times 10^3 = 1500\,\text{kg/m}^3ρl=1.5×103=1500kg/m3
  • Acceleration due to gravity: g=10 m/s2g = 10\,\text{m/s}^2g=10m/s2
  1. Pressure on both sides of the partition at the window

Since both compartments are filled completely and the window is at the same depth on both sides, hydrostatic pressure at the window is:

  • On water side: Pw=ρwgh=1000×10×3=30000 PaP_w = \rho_w g h = 1000 \times 10 \times 3 = 30000\,\text{Pa}Pw=ρwgh=1000×10×3=30000Pa

  • On denser liquid side: Pl=ρlgh=1500×10×3=45000 PaP_l = \rho_l g h = 1500 \times 10 \times 3 = 45000\,\text{Pa}Pl=ρlgh=1500×10×3=45000Pa

  1. Net pressure difference across the door

ΔP=Pl−Pw=45000−30000=15000 Pa\Delta P = P_l - P_w = 45000 - 30000 = 15000\,\text{Pa}ΔP=Pl−Pw=45000−30000=15000Pa

  1. Net force tending to open the door

F=ΔP⋅A=15000×10−2=150 NF = \Delta P \cdot A = 15000 \times 10^{-2} = 150\,\text{N}F=ΔP⋅A=15000×10−2=150N

So, the external force required to keep the hinged door from opening is:

150 N\boxed{150\,\text{N}}150N

  1. Comparison with stored answer

Stored correct answer = 150

This matches our derived answer.
