For a train engine moving with speed of 20 ms−120 \mathrm{~ms}^{-1}20 ms−1, the driver must apply brakes at a distance of 500 m\mathrm{m}m before the station for the train to come to rest at the station. If the brakes were applied at half of this distance, the train engine would cross the station with speed x ms−1\sqrt{x} \mathrm{~ms}^{-1}x ms−1. The value of xxx is ‾\underline{\hspace{2cm}}. (Assuming same retardation is produced by brakes)

Correct answer: 200

  1. Given data
  • Initial speed of train engine: u=20 m s−1u = 20\,\text{m s}^{-1}u=20m s−1
  • To stop at the station, brakes must be applied 500 m500\,\text{m}500m before the station.
  • Retardation produced by brakes is the same in both cases.

  1. Find the retardation using the first situation

When the train comes to rest exactly at the station:

v=0,u=20 m s−1,s=500 mv = 0, \quad u = 20\,\text{m s}^{-1}, \quad s = 500\,\text{m}v=0,u=20m s−1,s=500m

Using the equation of motion,

v2=u2+2asv^2 = u^2 + 2asv2=u2+2as

Substitute the values:

0=(20)2+2a(500)0 = (20)^2 + 2a(500)0=(20)2+2a(500)

0=400+1000a0 = 400 + 1000a0=400+1000a

a=−4001000=−0.4 m s−2a = -\frac{400}{1000} = -0.4\,\text{m s}^{-2}a=−1000400=−0.4m s−2

So, the retardation is

0.4 m s−20.4\,\text{m s}^{-2}0.4m s−2

  1. Second situation: brakes applied at half the distance

Half of 500 m500\,\text{m}500m is

250 m250\,\text{m}250m

Now the engine starts braking 250 m250\,\text{m}250m before the station, with the same initial speed u=20 m s−1u=20\,\text{m s}^{-1}u=20m s−1 and same acceleration a=−0.4 m s−2a=-0.4\,\text{m s}^{-2}a=−0.4m s−2.

Let the speed at the station be vvv.

Again use:

v2=u2+2asv^2 = u^2 + 2asv2=u2+2as

v2=(20)2+2(−0.4)(250)v^2 = (20)^2 + 2(-0.4)(250)v2=(20)2+2(−0.4)(250)

v2=400−200=200v^2 = 400 - 200 = 200v2=400−200=200

Given that the speed at the station is x m s−1\sqrt{x}\,\text{m s}^{-1}xm s−1, so

v=xv = \sqrt{x}v=x

Thus,

x=v2=200x = v^2 = 200x=v2=200

  1. Final answer

200\boxed{200}200

  1. Comparison with stored correct answer

Stored correct answer = 200200200

Our derived answer also = 200200200.

So, the answer agrees with the stored correct answer.
