Correct answer: 6

  1. Use the relation between magnetic field strength and solenoid current

For a solenoid, the magnetic field strength (magnetising field) is

H=nI=NLIH = nI = \frac{N}{L}IH=nI=LNI

where:

  • HHH = magnetic field intensity in A m−1A\,m^{-1}Am−1
  • NNN = number of turns
  • LLL = length of solenoid
  • III = current

To demagnetise the bar magnet, the solenoid must produce a magnetising field equal in magnitude to the magnetic intensity of the magnet.

So,

H=2.4×103 A m−1H = 2.4 \times 10^3\ A\,m^{-1}H=2.4×103 Am−1

  1. Substitute the given values

Given:

  • N=60N = 60N=60
  • L=15 cm=0.15 mL = 15\text{ cm} = 0.15\text{ m}L=15 cm=0.15 m
  • H=2.4×103 A m−1H = 2.4 \times 10^3\ A\,m^{-1}H=2.4×103 Am−1

Using

H=NLIH = \frac{N}{L}IH=LNI

we get

2.4×103=600.15I2.4 \times 10^3 = \frac{60}{0.15}I2.4×103=0.1560I

  1. Simplify

600.15=400\frac{60}{0.15} = 4000.1560=400

So,

2400=400I2400 = 400I2400=400I

I=2400400=6I = \frac{2400}{400} = 6I=4002400=6

  1. Final answer

6 A\boxed{6\text{ A}}6 A

  1. Comparison with stored answer

Stored correct answer = 666

Our derived answer also is 666, so they agree.
