For a free body diagram shown in the figure, the four forces are applied in the 'x' and 'y' directions. Correct answer: A

  1. Condition for zero acceleration

For the net acceleration to be zero, the net force must be zero:

∑F⃗=0\sum \vec F = 0∑F=0

So, the additional force to be applied must be equal in magnitude and opposite in direction to the resultant of the four given forces.

  1. Resolve the given forces into x and y components

From the free body diagram, the four forces act only along the xxx and yyy directions.

Let the resultant of the given four forces be:

R⃗=Rxi^+Ryj^\vec R = R_x \hat i + R_y \hat jR=Rxi^+Ryj^

On summing the forces along the two axes from the figure, we get:

Rx=−1 N,Ry=−1 NR_x = -1\,\text{N}, \qquad R_y = -1\,\text{N}Rx=−1N,Ry=−1N

Hence,

R⃗=−i^−j^\vec R = -\hat i - \hat jR=−i^−j^

  1. Find the balancing force

To make net force zero, required additional force is:

F⃗add=−R⃗=i^+j^\vec F_{\text{add}} = -\vec R = \hat i + \hat jFadd=−R=i^+j^

So its magnitude is:

∣F⃗add∣=12+12=2 N|\vec F_{\text{add}}| = \sqrt{1^2+1^2} = \sqrt{2}\,\text{N}∣Fadd∣=12+12=2N

  1. Find the angle with positive x-axis

Since the force has equal positive xxx and yyy components,

tan⁡θ=11=1\tan \theta = \frac{1}{1} = 1tanθ=11=1

Therefore,

θ=45∘\theta = 45^\circθ=45∘

  1. Match with options

The required additional force is:

2 N at 45∘\boxed{\sqrt{2}\,\text{N at }45^\circ}2N at 45∘

So the correct option is:

A\boxed{\text{A}}A

  1. Comparison with stored answer

Stored correct answer: A
Derived answer: A
So, they agree.
