A system to 10 balls each of mass 2 kg are connected via massless and unstretchable string. The system is allowed to slip over the edge of a smooth table as shown in figure. Tension on the string between the 7th and 8th ball is ‾\underline{\hspace{2cm}} N when 6th ball just leaves the table. Correct answer: 36

Let the balls be numbered from the free hanging end upward along the string.

When the 6th ball just leaves the table, that means:

  • balls 111 to 666 are hanging vertically,
  • balls 777 to 101010 are still on the smooth table.

Each ball has mass m=2 kgm=2\,\text{kg}m=2kg.

1. Find acceleration of the whole system

Since the table is smooth, the only external force causing motion along the string is the weight of the hanging balls.

Hanging mass

Mh=6m=6×2=12 kgM_h = 6m = 6\times 2 = 12\,\text{kg}Mh=6m=6×2=12kg

Total mass

M=10m=10×2=20 kgM = 10m = 10\times 2 = 20\,\text{kg}M=10m=10×2=20kg

So the acceleration of the system is a=MhgM=12g20=3g5a = \frac{M_h g}{M} = \frac{12g}{20} = \frac{3g}{5}a=MMhg=2012g=53g

Taking g=10 m/s2g=10\,\text{m/s}^2g=10m/s2, a=3×105=6 m/s2a = \frac{3\times 10}{5} = 6\,\text{m/s}^2a=53×10=6m/s2

2. Find tension between 7th and 8th ball

Consider the subsystem consisting of balls 8,9,108,9,108,9,10 only.

These three balls are on the table, so the only horizontal external force on this subsystem is the tension TTT in the string between balls 777 and 888.

Total mass of this subsystem: M′=3m=3×2=6 kgM' = 3m = 3\times 2 = 6\,\text{kg}M′=3m=3×2=6kg

Since all balls move with acceleration a=6 m/s2a=6\,\text{m/s}^2a=6m/s2, we have T=M′a=6×6=36 NT = M'a = 6\times 6 = 36\,\text{N}T=M′a=6×6=36N

3. Final answer

36 N\boxed{36\,\text{N}}36N

4. Comparison with stored answer

Stored correct answer = 363636

Our derived answer = 363636

So the answer matches.
