Correct answer: C

  1. For a cyclic process, the system returns to its initial state.

Hence, the change in internal energy over one complete cycle is ΔU=0.\Delta U = 0.ΔU=0.

  2. From the first law of thermodynamics, Q=ΔU+W.Q = \Delta U + W.Q=ΔU+W. Since ΔU=0\Delta U = 0ΔU=0 for a cycle, Q=W.Q = W.Q=W.

So, the magnitude of heat exchanged is equal to the magnitude of the net work done in the cycle, i.e. the area enclosed in the PPP-VVV diagram.

  3. From the figure, the path ABCAABCAABCA encloses a semicircular area. The dimensions from the graph correspond to:

    • semi-major/semi-diameter scale giving radius along one axis as 555
    • the other scale as 222

    Therefore enclosed area is Area=12πab=12π(5)(2)=5π.\text{Area} = \frac{1}{2}\pi ab = \frac{1}{2}\pi(5)(2)=5\pi.Area=21πab=21π(5)(2)=5π.

  4. Therefore, ∣Q∣=∣W∣=5π J.|Q| = |W| = 5\pi \text{ J}.∣Q∣=∣W∣=5π J.

  5. Checking options:

    • A: zero   ×\;\times×
    • B: 40π40\pi40π   ×\;\times×
    • C: 5π5\pi5π   ✓\;\checkmark✓
    • D: 10π10\pi10π   ×\;\times×

Thus the correct option is C.
