Correct answer: D

  1. Let the Celsius temperature be CCC and the Fahrenheit temperature be FFF.

  2. The relation between them is F=95C+32.F=\frac{9}{5}C+32.F=59C+32.

  3. This is a linear equation of the form F=mC+b,F=mC+b,F=mC+b, where

  • slope m=95>0m=\frac{9}{5}>0m=59>0
  • intercept on the FFF-axis is 323232
  1. So the graph between CCC and FFF must have these properties:
  • it is a straight line
  • it has positive slope
  • it does not pass through the origin
  • when C=0C=0C=0, we get F=32F=32F=32
  • when F=0F=0F=0, we get 0=95C+320=\frac{9}{5}C+320=59C+32 C=-\frac{160}{9}\approx -17.8^C So it cuts the CCC-axis at a negative value.
  1. Therefore, the correct figure is the one showing a straight line with positive slope crossing the Fahrenheit axis at 323232 and the Celsius axis at about −18-18−18.

  2. Hence, the correct option is D.
