    1:11: 11:1
  2. B
    1:21: 21:2
  3. C
    1:41: 41:4

Correct answer: D

  1. Use the formula for speed of sound in a gas

The speed of sound in an ideal gas is v=γRTMv = \sqrt{\frac{\gamma R T}{M}}v=MγRT where:

    • γ\gammaγ = ratio of specific heats,
    • RRR = universal gas constant,
    • TTT = absolute temperature,
    • MMM = molar mass of the gas.
  2. Compare hydrogen and oxygen at the same temperature

At the same temperature, and since both hydrogen (H2\mathrm{H_2}H2) and oxygen (O2\mathrm{O_2}O2) are diatomic gases, we take γ\gammaγ to be the same for both.

    So, v∝1Mv \propto \frac{1}{\sqrt{M}}v∝M1

  3. Write the ratio

    vH2vO2=MO2MH2\frac{v_{\mathrm{H_2}}}{v_{\mathrm{O_2}}} = \sqrt{\frac{M_{\mathrm{O_2}}}{M_{\mathrm{H_2}}}}vO2vH2=MH2MO2

  4. Substitute molar masses

    • For hydrogen gas, MH2=2M_{\mathrm{H_2}} = 2MH2=2
    • For oxygen gas, MO2=32M_{\mathrm{O_2}} = 32MO2=32

    Therefore, vH2vO2=322=16=4\frac{v_{\mathrm{H_2}}}{v_{\mathrm{O_2}}} = \sqrt{\frac{32}{2}} = \sqrt{16} = 4vO2vH2=232=16=4

  5. Final ratio

    vH2:vO2=4:1v_{\mathrm{H_2}} : v_{\mathrm{O_2}} = 4 : 1vH2:vO2=4:1

  6. Check options

    • A: 1:11:11:1 ❌
    • B: 1:21:21:2 ❌
    • C: 1:41:41:4 ❌
    • D: 4:14:14:1 ✅

So the correct option is D.
