For three low density gases A, B, C pressure versus temperature graphs are plotted while keeping them at constant volume, as shown in the figure. JEE Main 2023 (Online) 1st February Evening Shift Physics - Heat and Thermodynamics Question 148 English The temperature corresponding to the point 'K\mathrm{K}K' is :
  1. A
    −273∘C-273^{\circ} \mathrm{C}−273∘C
  2. B
    −373∘C-373^{\circ} \mathrm{C}−373∘C
  3. C
    −100∘C-100^{\circ} \mathrm{C}−100∘C
  4. D
    −40∘C-40^{\circ} \mathrm{C}−40∘C

Correct answer: A

  1. For a low-density gas at constant volume, the ideal gas law gives P∝TP \propto TP∝T where TTT is the absolute temperature in kelvin.

  2. If pressure is plotted against temperature in ∘C^{\circ}\mathrm{C}∘C, the graph is a straight line: P∝(t+273)P \propto (t + 273)P∝(t+273) where ttt is temperature in ∘C^{\circ}\mathrm{C}∘C.

  3. Therefore, for any gas at constant volume, the pressure becomes zero when t+273=0t + 273 = 0t+273=0 t=−273∘Ct = -273^{\circ}\mathrm{C}t=−273∘C

  4. In the given graph, point KKK is the common temperature where the straight-line PPP vs ttt graphs extrapolate to zero pressure.

  5. Hence, the temperature corresponding to point KKK is −273∘C-273^{\circ}\mathrm{C}−273∘C

  6. Checking options:

    • A: −273∘C-273^{\circ}\mathrm{C}−273∘C ✅
    • B: −373∘C-373^{\circ}\mathrm{C}−373∘C ❌
    • C: −100∘C-100^{\circ}\mathrm{C}−100∘C ❌
    • D: −40∘C-40^{\circ}\mathrm{C}−40∘C ❌

So the correct option is A.
