Correct answer: B

  1. Steady state heat conduction principle
    In steady state, the rate of heat flow through both metallic blocks connected in series is the same.

For a slab,

Qt=kAΔTL\frac{Q}{t} = \frac{kA\Delta T}{L}tQ=LkAΔT

where:

  • kkk = thermal conductivity
  • AAA = cross-sectional area
  • LLL = length
  • ΔT\Delta TΔT = temperature drop across the slab

Since both blocks have the same cross-sectional area and are in series, we can write:

k1ΔT1L1=k2ΔT2L2\frac{k_1 \Delta T_1}{L_1} = \frac{k_2 \Delta T_2}{L_2}L1k1ΔT1=L2k2ΔT2
  1. Using the figure information
    From the given figure, the ratio of lengths and temperature drops is:
k1k2=L1L2⋅ΔT2ΔT1\frac{k_1}{k_2} = \frac{L_1}{L_2}\cdot \frac{\Delta T_2}{\Delta T_1}k2k1=L2L1⋅ΔT1ΔT2

The figure implies:

L1L2=2\frac{L_1}{L_2} = 2L2L1=2

and

ΔT2ΔT1=4\frac{\Delta T_2}{\Delta T_1} = 4ΔT1ΔT2=4

Therefore,

k1k2=2×4=8\frac{k_1}{k_2} = 2 \times 4 = 8k2k1=2×4=8

Since k2=Kk_2 = Kk2=K,

k1=8Kk_1 = 8Kk1=8K
