An object is placed at a distance of 12 cm in front of a plane mirror. The virtual and erect image is formed by the mirror. Now the mirror is moved by 4 cm towards the stationary object. The distance by which the position of image would be shifted, will be
  1. A
    4 cm towards mirror
  2. B
    2 cm towards mirror
  3. C
    8 cm away from mirror
  4. D
    8 cm towards mirror
View written solutionFree

Correct answer: D

  1. Initial position of image in a plane mirror

For a plane mirror, the image is formed at the same distance behind the mirror as the object is in front of it.

Given:

  • Object distance from mirror =12 cm= 12\text{ cm}=12 cm

So initially, the image is formed 12 cm12\text{ cm}12 cm behind the mirror.

  1. Mirror is moved towards the object

The mirror moves 4 cm4\text{ cm}4 cm towards the stationary object.

So the new object distance from the mirror becomes: 12−4=8 cm12 - 4 = 8\text{ cm}12−4=8 cm

Hence, after moving, the image will be formed 8 cm8\text{ cm}8 cm behind the new position of the mirror.

  1. Find the shift in image position

Let the initial mirror position be M1M_1M1 and final mirror position be M2M_2M2.

  • Mirror moves 4 cm4\text{ cm}4 cm towards the object.
  • In a plane mirror, image shifts by twice the displacement of the mirror when the object is stationary.

Therefore, Shift of image=2×4=8 cm\text{Shift of image} = 2 \times 4 = 8\text{ cm}Shift of image=2×4=8 cm

Now, since the mirror moved towards the object, the image also shifts in the same direction, i.e. towards the mirror's new position.

So the image shifts 8 cm towards the mirror.
