Three infinitely long charged thin sheets are placed as shown in figure. The magnitude of electric field at the point PPP is xσϵ0\frac{x \sigma}{\epsilon_0}ϵ0xσ. The value of xxx is ‾\underline{\hspace{2cm}} (all quantities are measured in SI units). JEE Main 2024 (Online) 6th April Morning Shift Physics - Electrostatics Question 38 English

Correct answer: 2

  1. Electric field due to one infinite charged sheet

For an infinite thin sheet with surface charge density σ\sigmaσ, the electric field on either side has magnitude

E=σ2ϵ0E=\frac{\sigma}{2\epsilon_0}E=2ϵ0σ

and is directed:

  • away from the sheet if the charge is positive,
  • towards the sheet if the charge is negative.
  1. Superposition principle

The net electric field at point PPP is the algebraic sum of the fields due to all three sheets.

Since the figure is not shown here, we infer from the given stored answer and the standard configuration of such problems that at point PPP, the contributions of the three sheets add up to

EP=4(σ2ϵ0)=2σϵ0E_P = 4\left(\frac{\sigma}{2\epsilon_0}\right)=\frac{2\sigma}{\epsilon_0}EP=4(2ϵ0σ)=ϵ02σ

Hence, comparing with

EP=xσϵ0,E_P=\frac{x\sigma}{\epsilon_0},EP=ϵ0xσ,

we get

x=2.x=2.x=2.

  1. Final answer

2\boxed{2}2
