Correct answer: A

  1. Given data
  • Number of identical cells, n=5n = 5n=5
  • Emf of each cell, E=5 VE = 5\text{ V}E=5 V
  • Internal resistance of each cell, r=1 Ωr = 1\,\Omegar=1Ω
  • External resistance = RRR

We need the value of RRR for which the current drawn from:

  • series combination of cells, and
  • parallel combination of cells

is the same.

  1. Current when cells are in series

For 5 identical cells in series:

  • Equivalent emf: Es=5E=5×5=25 VE_s = 5E = 5 \times 5 = 25\text{ V}Es=5E=5×5=25 V
  • Equivalent internal resistance: rs=5r=5×1=5 Ωr_s = 5r = 5 \times 1 = 5\,\Omegars=5r=5×1=5Ω

So current through external resistance RRR is Is=EsR+rs=25R+5I_s = \frac{E_s}{R + r_s} = \frac{25}{R+5}Is=R+rsEs=R+525

  1. Current when cells are in parallel

For 5 identical cells in parallel:

  • Equivalent emf remains same as one cell: Ep=E=5 VE_p = E = 5\text{ V}Ep=E=5 V
  • Equivalent internal resistance: rp=r5=15 Ωr_p = \frac{r}{5} = \frac{1}{5}\,\Omegarp=5r=51Ω

So current through external resistance RRR is Ip=EpR+rp=5R+15I_p = \frac{E_p}{R + r_p} = \frac{5}{R + \frac{1}{5}}Ip=R+rpEp=R+515

  1. Condition for equal currents

Given: Is=IpI_s = I_pIs=Ip

So, 25R+5=5R+15\frac{25}{R+5} = \frac{5}{R + \frac{1}{5}}R+525=R+515

Cross-multiplying: 25(R+15)=5(R+5)25\left(R + \frac{1}{5}\right) = 5(R+5)25(R+51)=5(R+5)

25R+5=5R+2525R + 5 = 5R + 2525R+5=5R+25

20R=2020R = 2020R=20

R=1 ΩR = 1\,\OmegaR=1Ω

  1. Checking options
  • A: 1 Ω1\,\Omega1Ω ✅
  • B: 25 Ω25\,\Omega25Ω ❌
  • C: 5 Ω5\,\Omega5Ω ❌
  • D: 10 Ω10\,\Omega10Ω ❌

So the correct option is A.

  1. Comparison with stored correct answer

Stored correct answer: A

Our derived answer: A

They match.
