Correct answer: A

  1. Use the meter bridge balance condition

For a meter bridge at balance point,

XY=l100−l\frac{X}{Y} = \frac{l}{100-l}YX=100−ll

where lll is the balancing length from end AAA.

Given:

  • Y=12.5 ΩY = 12.5\,\OmegaY=12.5Ω
  • l1=39.5 cml_1 = 39.5\,\text{cm}l1=39.5cm

So,

X12.5=39.5100−39.5=39.560.5\frac{X}{12.5} = \frac{39.5}{100-39.5} = \frac{39.5}{60.5}12.5X=100−39.539.5=60.539.5

Hence,

X=12.5×39.560.5X = 12.5\times \frac{39.5}{60.5}X=12.5×60.539.5

X=12.5×0.65289≈8.16 ΩX = 12.5\times 0.65289 \approx 8.16\,\OmegaX=12.5×0.65289≈8.16Ω

So,

X=8.16 ΩX = 8.16\,\OmegaX=8.16Ω

  1. After interchanging XXX and YYY

Now the balance condition becomes

YX=l2100−l2\frac{Y}{X} = \frac{l_2}{100-l_2}XY=100−l2l2

But interchanging the resistances in a meter bridge makes the new balancing length complementary:

l2=100−l1=100−39.5=60.5 cml_2 = 100 - l_1 = 100 - 39.5 = 60.5\,\text{cm}l2=100−l1=100−39.5=60.5cm

So,

l2=60.5 cml_2 = 60.5\,\text{cm}l2=60.5cm

  1. Check with options

We found:

  • X=8.16 ΩX = 8.16\,\OmegaX=8.16Ω
  • l2=60.5 cml_2 = 60.5\,\text{cm}l2=60.5cm

This matches Option A.

  1. Comparison with stored correct answer

Stored correct answer: A

Our derived answer is also A, so they agree.
