Two billiard balls of equal mass 30g strike a rigid wall with same speed of 108 kmph (as shown) but at different angles. If the balls get reflected with the same speed then the ratio of the magnitude of impulses imparted to ball 'a' and ball 'b' by the wall along 'X' direction is : JEE Main 2021 (Online) 25th July Morning Shift Physics - Center of Mass and Collision Question 48 English

Correct answer: B

  1. Impulse along a direction

Impulse equals change in momentum. Along the xxx-direction,

Jx=Δpx=m(vfx−vix)J_x = \Delta p_x = m(v_{fx}-v_{ix})Jx=Δpx=m(vfx−vix)

When a ball strikes a rigid wall and is reflected with the same speed, the component of velocity parallel to the wall remains unchanged, while the component perpendicular to the wall reverses.

So the magnitude of impulse is:

∣Jx∣=2m∣vx∣|J_x| = 2m|v_x|∣Jx∣=2m∣vx∣

provided xxx is normal to the wall.

  1. Convert speed

Given speed:

108 km/h=30 m/s108\ \text{km/h} = 30\ \text{m/s}108 km/h=30 m/s

Mass of each ball:

m=30 g=0.03 kgm = 30\text{ g} = 0.03\text{ kg}m=30 g=0.03 kg

Since mass and speed are same for both balls, the ratio of impulses depends only on the normal xxx-component of velocity.

  1. For ball aaa

From the figure, ball aaa strikes the wall at angle 45∘45^\circ45∘ with the normal (xxx-direction). Hence

vx,a=vcos⁡45∘=v2v_{x,a} = v\cos 45^\circ = \frac{v}{\sqrt{2}}vx,a=vcos45∘=2v

Therefore,

∣Jx,a∣=2mv2|J_{x,a}| = 2m\frac{v}{\sqrt{2}}∣Jx,a∣=2m2v

  1. For ball bbb

From the figure, ball bbb strikes the wall normally along the xxx-direction, so

vx,b=vv_{x,b} = vvx,b=v

Hence,

∣Jx,b∣=2mv|J_{x,b}| = 2mv∣Jx,b∣=2mv

  1. Take the ratio

∣Jx,a∣∣Jx,b∣=2mv22mv=12\frac{|J_{x,a}|}{|J_{x,b}|} = \frac{2m\frac{v}{\sqrt{2}}}{2mv} = \frac{1}{\sqrt{2}}∣Jx,b∣∣Jx,a∣=2mv2m2v=21

So,

∣Jx,a∣:∣Jx,b∣=1:2|J_{x,a}| : |J_{x,b}| = 1 : \sqrt{2}∣Jx,a∣:∣Jx,b∣=1:2

  1. Final answer

The required ratio is

1:2\boxed{1 : \sqrt{2}}1:2

So the correct option is D.

  1. Comparison with stored answer

Stored correct answer is B: 2:1\sqrt{2}:12:1.

My derived answer is D: 1:21: \sqrt{2}1:2.

Hence, I do not agree with the stored answer. The stored answer appears to have the ratio inverted.
