JEE MainPhysicsCenter of MassMCQ+4 / −1
Three objects A, B and C are kept in a straight line on a frictionless horizontal surface. The masses of A, B and C are m, 2m and 2m respectively. A moves towards B with a speed of 9 m/s and makes an elastic collision with it. Thereafter B makes a completely inelastic collision with C. All motions occur along same straight line. The final speed of C is : JEE Main 2021 (Online) 27th July Morning Shift Physics - Center of Mass and Collision Question 47 English

Correct answer: D

  1. First collision: A with B (elastic)

Masses:

  • mA=mm_A = mmA=m
  • mB=2mm_B = 2mmB=2m
  • mC=2mm_C = 2mmC=2m

Initial velocities:

  • uA=9 m/su_A = 9\,\text{m/s}uA=9m/s
  • uB=0u_B = 0uB=0
  • uC=0u_C = 0uC=0

For a 1D elastic collision, the final velocity of BBB is vB=2mAmA+mBuA+mB−mAmA+mBuBv_B = \frac{2m_A}{m_A+m_B}u_A + \frac{m_B-m_A}{m_A+m_B}u_BvB=mA+mB2mAuA+mA+mBmB−mAuB Since uB=0u_B=0uB=0, vB=2mm+2m⋅9=23⋅9=6 m/sv_B = \frac{2m}{m+2m}\cdot 9 = \frac{2}{3}\cdot 9 = 6\,\text{m/s}vB=m+2m2m⋅9=32⋅9=6m/s

(Also, AAA slows down to vA=mA−mBmA+mBuA=m−2m3m⋅9=−3 m/sv_A = \frac{m_A-m_B}{m_A+m_B}u_A = \frac{m-2m}{3m}\cdot 9 = -3\,\text{m/s}vA=mA+mBmA−mBuA=3mm−2m⋅9=−3m/s though this is not needed further.)

So after the first collision, BBB moves toward CCC with speed 6 m/s6\,\text{m/s}6m/s.

  1. Second collision: B with C (completely inelastic)

Now BBB of mass 2m2m2m moving at 6 m/s6\,\text{m/s}6m/s collides with CCC of mass 2m2m2m at rest, and they stick together.

Use conservation of momentum: 2m⋅6+2m⋅0=(2m+2m)V2m\cdot 6 + 2m\cdot 0 = (2m+2m)V2m⋅6+2m⋅0=(2m+2m)V 12m=4mV12m = 4mV12m=4mV V=3 m/sV = 3\,\text{m/s}V=3m/s

Since BBB and CCC stick together, the final speed of CCC is also 3 m/s3\,\text{m/s}3m/s

  1. Option check
  • A: 6 m/s6\,\text{m/s}6m/s ❌
  • B: 9 m/s9\,\text{m/s}9m/s ❌
  • C: 4 m/s4\,\text{m/s}4m/s ❌
  • D: 3 m/s3\,\text{m/s}3m/s ✅

Therefore, the correct answer is D.
