Correct answer: B

  1. Set up the situation

Let mass m1m_1m1 move initially with speed uuu, and mass m2m_2m2 be at rest.

  • Initial velocity of m1=um_1 = um1=u
  • Initial velocity of m2=0m_2 = 0m2=0

After collision, they move with equal speeds in opposite directions. Let that common speed be vvv.

So we can take:

  • Final velocity of m1=−vm_1 = -vm1=−v
  • Final velocity of m2=+vm_2 = +vm2=+v
  1. Apply conservation of linear momentum

Initial momentum: pi=m1up_i = m_1 upi=m1u

Final momentum: pf=m2(v)+m1(−v)=v(m2−m1)p_f = m_2(v) + m_1(-v) = v(m_2 - m_1)pf=m2(v)+m1(−v)=v(m2−m1)

Equating initial and final momentum: m1u=v(m2−m1)ag1m_1 u = v(m_2 - m_1) ag{1}m1u=v(m2−m1)ag1

  1. Use coefficient of restitution for collision

Since the problem says they collide and then move apart, we take it as an elastic collision type standard JEE interpretation unless otherwise stated.

For a head-on elastic collision, relative speed of separation=relative speed of approach\text{relative speed of separation} = \text{relative speed of approach}relative speed of separation=relative speed of approach

Before collision: u1−u2=u−0=uu_1 - u_2 = u - 0 = uu1−u2=u−0=u

After collision: v2−v1=v−(−v)=2vv_2 - v_1 = v - (-v) = 2vv2−v1=v−(−v)=2v

Thus, 2v=u⇒v=u22v = u \quad \Rightarrow \quad v = \frac{u}{2}2v=u⇒v=2u

  1. Substitute into momentum equation

From (1): m1u=u2(m2−m1)m_1 u = \frac{u}{2}(m_2 - m_1)m1u=2u(m2−m1)

Cancel uuu: m1=m2−m12m_1 = \frac{m_2 - m_1}{2}m1=2m2−m1

So, 2m1=m2−m12m_1 = m_2 - m_12m1=m2−m1 m2=3m1m_2 = 3m_1m2=3m1

Hence, m2:m1=3:1m_2 : m_1 = 3 : 1m2:m1=3:1

  1. Check options
  • A: 1:11:11:1 ❌
  • B: 3:13:13:1 ✅
  • C: 2:12:12:1 ❌
  • D: 1:21:21:2 ❌

Therefore, the correct answer is B.
