Center of Mass question

2019 · 12 Apr · Shift 1 · Q70

JEE MainPhysicsCenter of MassMCQ+4 / −1
A man (mass = 50 kg) and his son (mass = 20 kg) are standing on a frictionless surface facing each other. The man pushes his son so that he starts moving at a speed of 0.70 ms–1 with respect to the man. The speed of the man with respect to the surface is :
  1. A
    0.28 ms–1
  2. B
    0.47 ms–1
  3. C
    0.20 ms–1
  4. D
    0.14 ms–1

Correct answer: C

  1. Let the man's speed be vmv_mvm and the son's speed be vsv_svs with respect to the surface.

Since they are initially at rest on a frictionless surface, there is no external horizontal force on the system.

    Hence, horizontal momentum is conserved: 50vm+20vs=050v_m + 20v_s = 050vm+20vs=0

  2. Choose directions

Let the man move in the positive direction after pushing. Then the son moves in the opposite direction.

    So, 50vm=20vs50v_m = 20v_s50vm=20vs in magnitude, i.e. vs=5020vm=2.5vmv_s = \frac{50}{20}v_m = 2.5v_mvs=2050vm=2.5vm

  3. Use the given relative speed

The son moves at speed 0.70 m s−10.70\,\text{m s}^{-1}0.70m s−1 with respect to the man.

Since they move in opposite directions, relative speed is the sum of their speeds: vs+vm=0.70v_s + v_m = 0.70vs+vm=0.70

    Substitute vs=2.5vmv_s = 2.5v_mvs=2.5vm: 2.5vm+vm=0.702.5v_m + v_m = 0.702.5vm+vm=0.70 3.5vm=0.703.5v_m = 0.703.5vm=0.70 vm=0.703.5=0.20 m s−1v_m = \frac{0.70}{3.5} = 0.20\,\text{m s}^{-1}vm=3.50.70=0.20m s−1

  4. Match with options

    vm=0.20 m s−1v_m = 0.20\,\text{m s}^{-1}vm=0.20m s−1

So the correct option is C.

  5. Verification with stored answer

    Stored correct answer: C

    Our derived answer: C

    Hence, they agree.
